Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi is disappointed with the team’s AFCON 2019 semifinal defeat to the Desert Foxes of Algeria, Completesports.com reports.
The Super Eagles’ hopes of winning a fourth continental title came to an end after they suffered a 2-1 loss to Algeria at the Cairo International Stadium on Sunday.
Gernot Rohr’s men were second best for most of the first half and conceded an own goal after William Troost-Ekong put Riyad Mahrez’s dangerous cross into his own net.
Ighalo restored parity for the Super Eagles from the spot in the 70th minute and with extra time approaching, Riyad Mahrez curled in a superb free-kick to put paid to the ambition of the Super Eagles.
‘It’s very tough for us to take. The way we lost the game against Algeria was disappointing. It’s sad to concede from a free-kick late in the game. Now, we have to look up to the third-place game,” Akpeyi who plays for South African side, Chippa United stated after the game.
“We don’t want to think about what people are saying about our performance. We really gave it our best shot. We started this competition among 24 teams and a lot of teams are back home in their countries.
“This team is still young and have a good chance to do well in future. I know in future things will get better.”
The Super Eagles will take on the Carthage Eagles of Algeria in the Third-place match on Wednesday at the Al Salam Stadium, Cairo.

This fool is the cause of our lost !!!..Imagine his positioning , knowing that Mahraz is a left footed player? .If he had come closer to the right , he could have caught or Punch that ball away .Just look at how South African keeper dealt with Etebos free kick , also see how the Egyptian keeper did the same against South Africa and yet this old fool misjudged and rooted himself at the centre of the goal post as if he is about to catch a penalty kick after setting up a fruitless wall!!..Akepyi was the cause of our misfortune, bad goal keeping .I think all our keepers should be sent packing !!..I wonder how Rohr wasted 3 good years without sourcing for a formidable goal keeper for the country ?
And also the way the Algerian Goalie,Rais Mbolhi dealt with chukwueze free kick from similar range
My friend you are correct, the keeper is the worst thing that has happened to the eagles .the goalkeeper trainer is another disaster in that team,I played big time football as a goalkeeper and now training children here in Europe..all keepers knows that when you form your wall, you stay at the side the wall is no covering.if the ball pass the wall and beat the keeper, it’s not the keepers fault but the spot you are suppose to be covering as a keeper the ball passing there to score, that’s the keepers mistakes..
You are the fool ….. ingrate that haven’t achieved anything all your life

Lets put them in the correct leagues please. Out of all of them Alampasu had one premier game last season and Uzoho had 3 premier league games plus 7 games in the Spanish la Liga 2. None of them are ready for the Super Eagles. I would pick from this list to join our Under 23 squad though in order to prepare them for the future
@BigD man, I’m fully aware many of them are not in A leagues or first team right now but they’ve got the talent and coaching that Akpeyi and the inactive ones in npfl dont have…we can make do with them like cameroun did with Ondoa and Onana…Mind you I’d have been less disappointed had it been any of these guys dat made Akpeyi’s mistake cos they are young and still learning
Look guys, stop deceiving yourselves, this same keeper saved you in the first few minutes when your defenders are too casual. I cant understand how Collins gets to play as a left full back, he’s not offensive, he offers nothing going forward, an ola aina could have done better on the left.
People come in here to blast the coach forgetting these so called players are meant to be foreign professionals but they didnt actually play as one.
I must Confess, those guys deserves to be flogged allowing such a ridiculous goal against us.
That’s so not true. Collins is an overlapping fullback. .Watch all the qualifying matches he played…He and Awaziem (though a natural CB) were given specific instructions not to overlap..That’s why our goalie,Akpeyi faced very few shots on target throughout the tournament…
The Algerians played similar tactics. .their full backs never overlapped…and they played narrow (Mahrez occupied a central position for most of the match) making them resort to mostly over the top passes to Baghdad Bounedjah…They were simply better in the use of the ball than the Eagles
asumin i si u afta dat game enh u 4 nor get mout dey tok all dis 1ons. with yuh appas eyes
Akpeyi still get mouth, ahhh nigeria football done suffer
Akpeyi is the worse keeper to ever man the post for the Super Eagles I don’t know what he may have given the the goalkeeper trainer to consider him No 1
