Ajax showed support to their former Nigerian player Tijani Babangida, who was involved in a car accident that claimed the life of his younger brother Ibrahim and infant son Fadil.
On Thursday, 9 May 2024, Babangida, his wife, son and Ibrahim were involved in a car accident along the Kaduna-Zaria Road.
Ibrahim, a member of the 1993 Golden Eaglets team that won the 1993 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Japan, died on the scene while Fadil died on Friday night during surgery.
Ibrahim was a member of the Golden Eaglets side that won the 1993 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Japan.
Babangida, who is the president of the Nigerian players union, the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria is still receiving care at a hospital in Abuja.
Also, his wife is still receiving care at the Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria after undergoing facial surgery.
Before the start of their final league game of the season at Vitesse, Ajax players held a banner which translated in English reads: ‘Baba, THIS IS FOR YOU’.
The Ajax players were joined by Vitesse players to show support for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics gold medal winner.
Babangida joined Ajax in 1996 and scored 20 goals in 77 appearances before his exit in 2003. During his time at Ajax, he won the league title and the Cup in the 1997/98 season.
