Ruth Usoro on Tuesday claimed gold medal in women’s triple jump at the African Games 2023 in Accra, Ghana.
Usoro left it late until her very last jump, leaping from second to first place.
She needed to come big on her sixth jump, and she delivered, winning the event with a mark of 13.80m to land her first-ever African title.
Chukwuebuka Enekwechi successfully defended his African Games shot put title, winning Nigeria’s first gold medal in athletics at this year’s games.
This is Enekwechi’s second consecutive title at the African Games
In the men’s 100m, Usheoritse Itsekiri won silver after coming through in a time of 10.23s.
He upgraded his bronze from Rabat 2019 while compatriot Consider Ekanem came fourth.
The gold medal went to Emmanuel Eseme of Cameroon who emerged Champion in 10.14s.
In the women’s 100m, Olayinka Olajide won Nigeria’s first medal in athletics at the African Games in Accra, after clinching bronze.
She placed third with a time of 11.55s in the games which is her first senior international outing for Nigeria.
