England-born Nigerian forward Oladapo Afolayan was in action as St. Pauli lost 2-0 at home to Heidenheim on its return to the Bundesliga.
Afolayan, who was ned among the substitutes, came on in the 76th minute.
In front of 29,157 spectators, goals from Paul Wanner (67th) and Jan Schöppner (82nd) secured the win for the visitors.
St. Pauli were the better team after an even first quarter of an hour, but missed several several opportunities.
Heidenheim, on the other hand, took full advantage of its two chances in the second half and left with the three points.
Afolayan and his St Pauli teammates clinched promotion to the Bundesliga 13 years after their last top-division appearance.
St Pauli, who managed for the first time in their history to finish higher in the table than their bitter cross-city rivals Hamburg SV, won their sixth promotion to the Bundesliga.
