Benin Republic head coach Gernot Rohr believed his team deserved more from Thursday night’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match against Nigeria.
The Cheetahs were held to a 1-1 draw by the three-time African champions.
The hosts dominated the game but were let down by their poor marksmanship.

Rohr stated that they were unlucky not to win the keenly contested game.
“It was a fair result,” Rohr, who once managed the Super Eagles said after the game.
“But we were unlucky, because we had the better chances and organization to win the game.
“Nigeria is not a team that is easy to beat. But if we had taken the chances we had with scores at 1-0, maybe the result would have been different.”

It is ok.
You’re so right GENERAL!
We are so lucky to get a draw..
We are so lucky to have CAF gift us 3 points and 3 goals…
We are so lucky to have LYBIA defeat Rwanda so we can qualify..
We now run our football on luck since you left…
What if there is no luck next time???
Please tell your Oga say he will need doses of luck on Monday against Libya and their antics.
So it was luck that made us thrash Benin 3:0 in UYO? That luck must be something else
You will need that luck on Monday away against Libya or else straight to the unemployment market.
Na Eguavoen when start with the wrong formation I blame. If he started with the team that played 2nd half, and the formation he reverted to, you for they say something different.
If my uncle where to be my aunty bin laden would have become president of America.
If Mohammed Tijani had converted the 1 v 1 he had late in the 1st half to make the scores 2-0 and Jodel Dossou not hurried his shot to make it 3-0, you for dey say something different too.
You think you are the only one who has “if” scenarios to tell….LMAOoo
Well @ Rohr… May be you’re right.
Something is wrong from the NFF to the manager to some overrated and weak players.
Eguavoen had been with this team since 2006, he experienced Rohr Era, Paseiro’s, Finidi’s and he became the coach himself, if by now, this is the best he can offer? Then there will be a big problem. You have Iwobi and Dele-Bashiru and you chose Iheanacho in advance role ? In a must win match?
I observed something about our keeper too, watching him yesterday made me feel like watching Old Peter Rufai at France 98. The only difference between them was that he played with younger defenders unlike Rufai that was exposed by aged defenders e.g Uche Okechukwu, Eguavoen himself, Taribo west, Uche Okafor etc it was even Adepoju , a midfielder that played mostly from the right back. Where Nwabali parried most of the shots yesterday were towards the opponents if not for some defenders that came to the rescue . He might be exposed against some European teams or a team like Argentina.
Majority of our coaches are career killers, Akpoguma played as a right back and left sided defender when he was called, Osho, a left back /left Central defender played from the right yesterday and underperformed and guess what, that becomes his identity unless he’s able to clear his name.
Iwobi had since became an enemy of Nigerian football since he’s been playing as a deep lying midfielder.
He used to be a brain behind most of our goals in the past.
We need to introduce new players but have we noticed that apart from Osho that doesn’t need paper works to play for Nigeria, we’ve not worked on any players switched since Gusau became president ? Some players will not smell super eagles unless they can walk straight to eagles without paperwork. May God help us all.
@ Alex, Eguavoen is not a COACH, his DECISIONS making in terms of TEAM SELECTION and TATICS of play are worrisome. – You See How Benin Republic Dey Run Through Nigeria Yesterday Like “MUMMY RETURNS”?
Tell Eguavoen to RESIGN his position as a coach for his INCOMPETENCY, he will tell you “Hell No”, the BIG BROWN ENVELOPES that come from those UNFIT PLAYERS, he features in his matches will not make him RESIGN. Eguavoen and his gangs hold Nigeria football to a STANDSTILL.
.
Rohr did really well with the tactics deployed. He understood the Super Eagles. He exploited the incapacitated Iwobi and controlled midfield, he saw another short one juniorman on the attacking right and used the extra man to double mark Lookman. He knows Bassey and Ekong are not comfortable with physical and fast attackers, the reason they got the chances. He frustrated Aina with zonal marking l, blocking all the spaces.
But he got it wrong with Simon. Simon is the most improved player from Rohr’s team. He has more than 50% assist contribution in all the AFCONQ so far.
It’s obvious that Eguavoen or any local coach is not right for the team. Local coaches are just too corrupt, deplorable and dishonest to lead the team.
@Larry… may God bless you bigly for your super comment. Eguaveon is just a political quack coach… the moment you hire a Nigerian local coach their fraudulent default setting takes over their mind… Eguaveon is the worst, guarding National Team Invitation with a cult-like secrecy. Imagine calling up a Crawly Town Player ahead of a Bundesliga regular like Akpoguma whom we chased hitherto for several years… inviting Chukwueze, Awoniyi and Iheanacho when their club form is zero… what must the likes of Akpom, Ogbu and Buhari do to get a call-up as if they especially Chuba Akpom is not Nigerian… Eguaveon should be removed faraway from the team before resumption of WCQ… come 2025.
@Larry
Really great comments.
At times Lookman had 3 players on him, because the threat from the RHS was so minimal
As much as I have enjoyed his past endeavour’s,Iheanacho time has passed,he just doesn’t have the energy anymore. Off the ball work non existent.
The best front 3 is Lookman, Osimhen and Simon…With Lookman and Simon interchanging. They should start for now
Every single goal in the Afcon quals 24/25 has come from this front 3 scoring or assisting.
But we need another front 3 of similar consistency and quality as backups.
Iheanacho, Sadiq, et al are just not it.
Did anyone notice how our defense actually missed Ajayi?
