Augustine Eguavoen praised his players after they fought back to earn a share of the spoils against the Cheetahs of Benin Republic on Thursday night.
The Super Eagles held Gernot Rohr’s men to a 1-1 draw in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture.
Mohammed Tijani gave Benin Republic the lead on 16 minutes with a powerful header.

Nigeria however fought back with Victor Osimhen equalising with another header eight minutes from time.
Eguavoen praised his players for putting up a good fight in the second half.
“It was a tough game and I congratulate the players for a spirited display in the second half that earned us the equaliser,” Eguavoen told thenff.com.
“The downpour made the game difficult for both teams, but I am happy we have the AFCON finals ticket in the bag ahead of the final game of the series against Rwanda in Uyo on Monday.”

EGUAVOEN is just LUCKY BENEFITING off GENERAL ROAR’S LEGACY..cos apart from NWABALI and one or two PLAYERS 95 PERCENT of the BOYS are his BOYS…so it’s still GENERAL ROAR’S TEAM…
LMAO….And it’s FUNNY that with all the CALIBER of PlAYERS GENERAL ROAR left in his POSSESSION, he still needs the HELP of LYBIA and 3 POINTS plus 3 GOALS from CAF to QUALIFY and yet some of his FANS are shouting he QUALIFIED with 2 GAMES to SPARE trying to COMPARE him to GENERAL ROAR when the LATTER back then ACHIEVED and BROKE every RECORD all by himself without the help of no one…. LMAO
Exactly what I expect @Dr Drey to say when I attacked him earlier but he disappointed me, but you using that as an excused now is baseless, so you think Libya would have won that match? Listen had it been we needed todays match so badly, the boys would have put in more effort, we surely preferred Benin to qualify to Libya, we did Benin little favor today so let them go into the last match and conquer Libya to qualify.
Lmao! Is Libya team not better than the Tunisia CORONAVIRUS INFECTED B TEAM with an ASSISTANT COACH on APPRENTICESHIP that DEFEATED your FULL FLEDGED TEAM???
Like I said before I response to your query…..you and your likes said there was nothing special in qualifying for tournaments with games to spare….you all refused to acknowlege such feat as something even worth discussing. It was not a big deal back then….LMAOoo
So why is it suddenly becoming a big deal now….? Why do you suddenly want to celebrate it now.
When you acknowlege and celebrate Rohr’s feat back then, we too will join you to acknowlege and celebrate it now.
Something cannot be worthless because it was done by a white man and suddenly become prestigious because it has just been done by a black man.
Mind you, consistency is what makes a man…..Rohr did it back to back to back to back. He even did it in a group that had Zambia, Cameroon and Algeria. He did it with a team that had found it difficult to qualify for AFCON back to back…..not with Afcon Vice Champions.
The day Eguavoen qualies from a group that has current afcon champions, former african champions and a potential afcon favorite with games to spare, we will celebrate him too.
And by the way, I thought Rohr was supposed to be an ordinary PE teacher….LMAOoo…watching yesterday’s game, who looked more like an ordinary PE teacher between Eguavoen and Rohr…???
You best local coaches can only get 4 points out of 9 from a PE teacher and mechanic coaching a lowly team like Benin republic…..LMAOoo. It that not a big disgrace…??!
Drey when is the ghost of rohr going to leave you. Can you move on from rohr. You’re even suggesting we bring him back. Haba.
I love your great knowledge of football analysis but you always fall my hands with this rohr issue.
Pls go and copy and paste anywhere I ever said We should bring Rohr back.
You don’t have to tell cheap lies because you are desperate to get back at people.
If there is anything false in what Ive said point it our….rather than trying to score political points.
I appreciate Rohr and all he did for us at our lowest ebb. Go and ask Ghanaians how it feels now not qualifying for Ordinary AFCON. We went through that pain back to back.
You dont appreciate him, I do….why is it giving you stomach ulcers.
Im sorry to break bad news to you, the ghost of Rohr will not leave me or nigeria as long as he’s still coaching in africa and we have to face him. He has practically put the Nail on our WCQ coffin….LMAOoo. 2026 WC is already a still birth for us…..LMAOoo. especially now that Eguavoen has succeeded in decieving y’all with his new manager bounce which is now nearing expiry sọ fast….LMAOoo
Your local coaches have only been able to take 4 points off him out of9, despite coaching a team whose players cannot even earn a callup to the SE talk more of making the SE bench.
If we are not going to qualify for the world cup, he will have a say. If we will he will have a say. That’s the person yall called an ordinary PE teacher….LMAOoo
If there’s anything false i have said, point it out. Otherwise, who i choose to like or choose not to like is none of your bysiness.
Stop letting another man’s business pour acid in your stomach.
When Rohr was qualifying for every tournament with games to spare, something that used to be alien to us, it was no big deal according to folks like you, because of the racism and hatred in yall. But all of a sudden, we must celebrate all through the weekend because libya has handed us qualification with games to spare….LMAOoo. it has suddenly become a big deal….LMAOoo
Excuse upon excuse, okay now we move if given eguavoen his deserve accolade is that difficult for you, kosi wahala, see where u carry matter go again, truely you and @ Monkey Post fit each other.
You have you given Rohr the PE teacher and mechanic his due accolades yet….LMAOoo
Or have you suddenly forgotten
“….qualifying for tournaments with games to spare is not a big deal….it is not an achievement…”
Why is it suddenly a big deal that deserves accolades now….LMAOoo
Did Rohr not benefit players from his predecessors as well? Please overcome this blame games or negative views of everything before we cease hearing from you. Just an advice before your life becomes too toxic for existence.
Yes, you are right. He inherited players who couldn’t qualify for back to back AFCONs.
No give yourself sense them dey talk A you dey answer B olodo!
Hahahaha….you are wrong…..LMAOoo. Rohr inherited african champions….LMAOoo
Thank you for that perfect answer..!!!
May you walk and never stumble.
I know that you’re a living dead so no need to be fraternising with the dead. Stupid disgusting boy!
Hahahaha….I am a living dead but the quality of my life is still miles better than yours….LMAOoo. It is so bad for you now that you can not even afford to watch live matches anymore….LMAOoo.
So who’s the walking dead between you and I…LMAOooo???
You that died the day you sold your family land to go slave in the Yankees…LMAOoo
Sensless fool….LMAOoo
Rohr inherited players from his successor, but you are too daft to remember Rohr’s predecsessors failed to qualify for both the 2015 and 2017 AFCONS before the team was handed to Rohr and then we started qualifying for ALL tournaments even with games in hand….LMAOoo
Useless animal.
Within a few months idiot is already complaining “Abroad is not easy”….LMAOoo. You will die slaving in America…ehn.. You’ve not seen anything yet….LMAOoo
Like all the members of your family right…?! LMAooo. Imbecile..!
The question to ask the fool is with his new assembled players what major trophy did Rorh win with the super eagles. What was he paid for, can someone tell us.
Well done boys.
Well guys we need a tactical coach Egu May b good at man management but he is not a tactical coach if u watched d match void of sentiment u will agree with me that GR is d master tactically, if d two coaches are on the opposite side GR will beat Egu silly, and it pains me the more that since 2006 Egu started his romance with d SE as interim coach he has done nothing to improve himself tactically he believes he knows it all, guys wey de sing Egu praises now wait until we play South Africa u guys will be heart broken
I suggested he needs to understudy a coach in Europe or go for training. But the game exposed his tactical deficiency big time.
He has to go for a better Foreign coach. Safer for him financially as Technical Director than Super Eagles coach.
The issue is that are the nff ready to go for a tactical coach, eguavoen is not the problem are the players ready themselves.
Eguavon, you’re joke inviting big tummy Iheanacho and lazy Sadiq has open ur yansh, you’re not ready or competent for this job. Hiding behind sentiments and luck will not save u. Playing 3 4 3 requires midfielders with balls sense I mean real ballers not stiff or lazy players.i ve said it before and I would be saying it again, our best midfield combo Onyenka , Dele and Olawoyin. Or Ndidi, Dele,Olawoyin.
Congratulations to the Super Eagles for winning an Afcon qualification – players led by Captain Ekong and technical crew headed by Manager Eguavoen.
Pleased to note the technical crew tried out a few players in the starting 11. I expect a few who didn’t play against Benin will be fielded against Rwanda. Good strategy.
However, Ihenacho has had his time. Iwobi and Ndidi are also no longer effective in the Eagles set up, and this has been so for several matches. Moses Simon almost always adds value; how to play him and undroppable Lookman? We don’t have a reliable right wide player. Coaches should consider calling up new players, or try a current squad player in that role.
All things noted, well done. Can do better with more training together.
More important is winning World Cup qualification. Peseiro and Finidi have led us into unexpectedly bad position, let’s support new crew to transform situation.
Up Super Eagles! Up Nigeria!
Best response so far. God bless you sir.
@Olayinka We Drew with Benin away we drew with Rwanda Away we wer gifted a win by CAF against Libya a match in Hindsight we would not have won, especially in that Hostile Tripoli crowd, You people should stop this blind Support of Indigenous Rubbish we are planing to fail with that Mentality If we Meet SA away with this Coach and Benin again, that is to say we are not wanting to go to World Cup, what is killing this country is that mentality you people are showing the same mentality this yeye President has.
Yet again as Nigerians we are deceiving ourselves, a team got 3 points handed to us then we drew with Benin had it been we played that game against Libya with this our Shoddy away record I am not convinced we would have won that game in a hostile Libya crowd. So that in Mind Eguavoen has to go there is no two ways around it this always planing to fail Nigeria is good at is worrisome and some Neglegenat fans section of Fans who are riddled with Bias will always oppose sound reasoning, Look IT IS AS SIMPLE AS THIS IF WE DON’t GET A QUALITY COACH BEFORE WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS AND WE STICK WITH EGUAVOEN WE ARE NOT GOING TO WORLD CUP AND WE ARE NOT GOING FAR IN AFCON PERIOD!, Whether people like it or not that is the simple truth!!
Well said @Ugo. You are the best, forget the rest. That Pompei is an amateur where people like you are concerned. Eguavoen must go.
@Segun West don’t mind Nigerians this is hpow they will constantly support mediocre then come and blame our Overseas stars when it is clear that they play with no clear direction or Cohesion because of a clueless coach, infact let this be a warning to NIGERIANS IF WE DARE GO TO PLAY SOUTH AFRICA IN SOUTH AFRICA NEXT YEAR WITH EGUAVOEN AS COACH AND NOT A WORLD CLASS WHITE EUROPEAN COACH THAT READS THE GAME DIFFERENTLY IF WE DON’T COLLECT ABOUT 3 GOALS CALL ME A LIAR. THIS IS TOO UNFAIR HOW CAN WE BE THIS DAFT???? REAPEATING THE SAME MISTAKE YEAR IN YEAR OUT AND EXPECTING A DIFFERENT OUTCOME, IS THIS INSANITY OR WHAT?.
@Segun West don’t mind Nigerians this is hpow they will constantly support mediocre then come and blame our Overseas stars when it is clear that they play with no clear direction or Cohesion because of a clueless coach, infact let this be a warning to NIGERIANS IF WE DARE GO TO PLAY HUGO BROOS SOUTH AFRICA IN SOUTH AFRICA NEXT YEAR WITH EGUAVOEN AS COACH AND NOT A WORLD CLASS WHITE EUROPEAN COACH THAT READS THE GAME DIFFERENTLY IF WE DON’T COLLECT ABOUT 3 GOALS CALL ME A LIAR. In a nutshell, the current SE players need sound coach not even half baked European or American coach.
Austin Eguaveon lacks required tactical and technical acumen to lead SE to the promised land, period.
Hypocrites everywhere, because it is a local coach, you not making nasty remarks about his style. Am just wondering had it being Rorh at the helms of affairs and CAF awarded us those 3 points, would you all come out and be saying this crap some of you are spilling. Since you all know better than the coach, why not apply for his position since it seems like a piece of cake to many of you
Kenneth I wonder o. Though eguavon needs to sit up but that does not rule out the fact that he has qualified us for afcon with two games in hand
