Grammy-nominated afrobeat singer,, Seun Kuti has criticized the commitment of the Super Eagles players whenever they are on national duty.
He expressed disappointment with the Super Eagles’ lack of commitment and their failure to replicate their club form when playing for the national team.
He lamented the lack of seriousness and dedication shown by the African players, including Nigerian footballers, during international competitions, labeling them as the least disciplined athletes.
In response to Super Eagles’ underwhelming 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Kuti shared a video message on his Instagram page, where he dismissed the players’ excuses of underperformance due to financial motivation, pointing out that most of them are already wealthy and do not depend on payment from the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).

“Nigerian footballers are not patriotic. I don’t care what anybody says. They are more interested in their oyibo clubs and the glams. They are not patriotic.
“They might say it is because the national football body doesn’t treat them well. Africa doesn’t treat anyone well. But it’s our duty to do well for Africa because it is ours. So those excuses that they are being owed are irrelevant. You guys are multi-millionaires. How much is NFF going to pay you? Even if they pay you, you won’t take it home. It’s nothing to you.
“I watched Super Eagles last game. Do you guys watch the Euros and World Cup? Don’t you see how European teams enter fields? Don’t you see how focused their players are? Even Nigerian footballers, when they are at their clubs, they are always focused. But when they come to the Nations’ Cup, they are unserious. African footballers are the craziest of athletes. I’m sorry to say this.”

Okay! I dey always talk am here but some folks will attack me..I kept on asking on this forum that how much is this money that they are being owed that this millionaires/billionaires can’t give their best..
Everybody they suffer for africa na..even me they are some patriotic/volunteering jobs that am currently doing for my country…
Thank you seun. I know say if your father still dey here him for the yab them tire… And am sure alot of people will say he is unpatriotic and negative like they always label him when he was alive….
EweSeun, IgboKuti. You have said it all. All we need is focus and patriotism from our players. Fight for the green and white with all your heart and soul.
Well said Seun, told a colleague that if any of my children end up been an athlete of any kind and decided to play for other country aside his or her fatherland, I will disown him or her straight, if we all keep saying the country is bad and all, who then is gonna fix it? All players go back to there various club for treatment whenever on duty with the NT but some fans want our NFF to treat our own players and even give them food on the treatment bed, yes we all want reward for our labor, and payment is the reward for labor but it is what it is and we find ourself in the hand of criminal leaders, we just gat do our part nooni.
Aeun Kutu is always playing his music abroad for high fees. I wonder when he will play free concerts for the poor in Maiduguri,Calabar, Onitsha, Ilesha?
Stop saying what you don’t know my brother..With as low as one thousand naira, you can watch seun kuti and other top musicians perform live at the African shrine in lagos (felabration) every year of October and he performs well with high energy and passion to his fans..
God bless you!
There should be no double standard. What is good for the goose should be also good for the gander.
NFF as the custodian of Nigerian football has the moral and civic duty to run our football in a way that protects Nigeria’s football interests. They answer to the Nigerian people.
NFF’s lack of commitment is also unpatriotic. if we are to blame the players, then NFF must receive their full and undiluted share.
So Seun should NOT lay blame only on the players. The lionshare of the blame has to rest squarely on the incompetent shoulders of NFF ONIGBESE.
Millionnaire Musicians like Seun and footballers are the same. Their noses are for smelling dollar bills and women. Its their fans who are foolish.
I am hundred percent in agreement with seun kuti . Honestly, he is pragmatic in his analysis, one thing we fail to appreciate is that whatever talents we have been gifted by God is primarily meant to serve God Almighty and humanity which of course we will give account on the day of judgment so whatever environment we find ourselves is the test of faith for our destiny to success just as gold passes through the furnace before it becomes valuable. How many orphanages has Mr Kuti built in Nigeria, like Odion Ighalo and other footballers? Kuti has been playing his music around the world and raking in money. What contribution has he made to upliftment of slums in Ajegunle and other stinking places in Lagos?
Seun! So you believe in patroictism and you molested your country police officer in public. I rest my case!
Very easy to criticise. Those giys were playing at 2pm under hot sun and very humid conditions.
Instead of berating CAF for placing TV viewership ovet players’ health, he is lashing out at the footballers.
When did he last see UEFA play a game at 2pm (even in the temperate European climate)?
