Former Nigeria international Sunday Oliseh has tipped Côte d’Ivoire and Super Eagles as title contenders at this year’s AFCON.
Oliseh stated this after struggling Côte d’Ivoire defeated champions Senegal 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw.
The Ivorians went into the game against Senegal on the back of a poor group stage performance where they lost 4-0 to Equatorial Guinea.
The Elephants managed to progress into the round of 16 thanks to Morocco’s win against Zambia in their final group game.
Reacting to the win against Senegal, Oliseh wrote on his X:”Change of Coach to a Local one 4 days ago & Cote D’ivoire are in my eyes, now, potential title contenders with Naija!
“5 days ago, they were begging Morocco to beat Zambia to help them qualify, Tonight (Monday) they eliminate Title Fav’s, Senegal. Football is A fantastic, Crazy Rollercoaster.”
The Ivorians will be back in action on Saturday against a year to be identified opponent in the quarter-finals.
For the Eagles they will take on Angola on Friday, 2 January inside the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, Abidjan.

This rejuvenated Ivorian team should be of concern to the remaining teams in this year’s Afcon. They took Senegal to the cleaners that I was asking myself if this was the star studded Teranger lions. With their vociferous fans backing them, ego hard O!
Alex I don’t see Senegal team has a star studded side ,player to player they can’t compare with the set of Fadiga, Henry Camara ,Elhaji Diouf etc.But they are strong as a team.Maybe Mane,Kalidou Coulibally and Mendy. The rest most are upcoming, the likes of Lamine Camara, the two stars.Player to player ,Cotedvoire is slightly ahead.
So, because Ivory Coast beat Senegal in penalty that has made Ivory Coast the cup contender. This Olise is funny.
I can bet it that Ivory Coast can’t play in the final of this competition.
Hahaha, CIV are overnight contenders.
Almost out last week, quarterfinalist this week.
And having beaten Senegal, momentum dey with them.
Will they win the cup? Unlikely, but not impossible.
I don’t think Ivory Coast can beat this Mali team. Cisse’s Senegal are not enterprising. They have two young players in midfield and they rely on Mane to create magic. Besides they’ve never beaten Ivory Coast in any matchup.
As for the SuperEagles we are battle ready and only focusing on Angola. We will maintain our shape and play with vigor. No looking face and we no Dey gree for anybody. Onyeka is a battering ram. Iwobi threads passes like a needle. Oaimhen and Lookman have formed a devastating partnership. Ekong is a rock of Gibraltar. Ajayi leaves everything on the pitch. (Reminds me of Gentle Giant Uche Okechukwu)
VAMOS ARRIBBA SUPEREAGLES!!!!
That quick pass from Iwobi that led to the 2nd goal against Cameroon.
That pass took out 3 Cameroon defenders.
That’s what he brings to the table.
To be honest we only criticize him because he’s JayJay’s nephew. He’s a master of two touch football that keeps our attack on the move. Even though we like to see him dribble. However, his quick passes always sets our attack in motion and that’s one of the reasons we created a lot of chances. He doesn’t tackle unnecessary but cleanup most times. Apart from that momentarily loss of possession against EG, Alexander the Great has been great in this tournament.
GINGER O PO!
With Osimhen, Ijaya Olusosun, the Lion of Africa, we no dey gree for anybody.
Na so CAF dey hail us after the Cameroon game.
Indeed, it looks like this cup is Nigeria’s to lose.
But we must beware!
Pride goes before a fall. We must stay humble and focused.
Besides, Morocco is still in the competition. They are a very difficult side to overcome.
Anyway, Angola is the opponent in front of us now. We have to cage the Palancas Negras. Then, we we take it one game at a time.
All hands on deck!
Having Osimhen upfront does not only bring goals and pressing…..it keeps the centre backs of the opponent wary and this affects the attack and overall play of the opponent….Modern football starts from the centre backs and when they are constantly worried about Osimhen then to defeat the opponent is easier…..Also a team worried about a possible devastating counter attack from our front three will be modest in attacking us.
Wow! Morocco going home. This is SuperEagles tournament to lose, but we focus on Angola.
Morocco missed a penalty wow! I said it that they might bottle it against SA. South Africa kinda know how to handle the North Africans. Lmao! I think it’s time we start taking them seriously.
VAMOS ARRIBBA SUPEREAGLES!!!! Fly like an eagle into the future. Looks like it’s coming back home.
