Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has explained how Jose Peseiro and his coaching crew neutralized Côte d’Ivoire’s attacking threat.
The Eagles had it all to play no thanks to their disappointing 1-1 draw with Equatorial Guinea.
After a goalless first half, it was the Eagles who took the lead on 55 minutes thanks to vice captain, William Troost-Ekong, who converted a 55th minute penalty following a foul on Victor Osimhen.
The hosts did all they could to get back into the game but could not penetrate a resilient Eagles backline.
Following the win, the Eagles go second on four points behind Equatorial Guinea, who also have four points thanks to their 4-2 win against Guinea-Bissau.

“Very nice victory for the Nigerian team against Ivory Coast who were not in the game at all,” Rohr said in his post-match analysis on the X handle of former BBC reporter Osasu Obayiuwana.
“Very good organisation, 5-4-1, it was decisive (for Super Eagles) because we didn’t see the Ivory Coast strikers.
“The five defenders, two on the side did a good job and in the midfield Alex Iwobi did very well with Onyeka also Chukwueze and Lookman came back to help and were in good offensive situation as wingers when Nigeria had the ball.
“It’s a very good result, I’m happy for my former players because they’ve been so many criticism and they responded with this match against the host country.“
However, the current Benin Republic head coach cautioned the Eagles not to be complacent.
“They must be careful and remain humble because at the last AFCON they won all their group games but lost in the round of 16, each match is very important.“
On Monday, the three-time AFCON winners will take on Guinea-Bissau in their final Group A game.

Well said my man, rohr. Your unflinching love and connection with the eagles wherever u are cannot be over emphasized. If humility was a person, it is you. May credit be given to who deserves it the most: the coach and as well the players. The coach really executed his game plan perfectly well and it worked. That is what we want to be seeing anytime the eagles play. Kudos to him big time. It can only get better! One game at a time…
We appreciate your words, coach.
You remain highly valued.
Well said General Rohr. So Paseiro is not a bad coach afterall or he has gone to take some tutorials from Jose Mourhino?
Maybe
Classic last resort approach to grinding out results.
Put 7 men in your penalty box behind the ball and 3 fast guys up front for counters.
Some say it’s a lazy way to coach a team, I say it’s just being pragmatic.
Rohr is a good man and has a good heart.Rohr would have taken Nigeria farther in the last Nations Cup. He understands football.
Like he did at the world cup abi? Kai, it is well. Ire o. God bless Nigeria!!!
You have a myopic view of the event. Rohrs green horned side in 2018, had the ignominy of facing an in form Croatian team and a FIFA backed Argentinian team. They were a well tutored tactical side that always had decent 2nd halves of games.
If GENERAL ROAR was still the coach it would’ve been toping the group with 6 points..our next game with guinea bissau would just be a mere formality
I sincerely and deeply agreed with every post above. It was very sweet of me to read your honest posts . God bless you all.
Monkey Post it’s not formality game , it is a real game which will decide if Super Eagles can be at the top of the group , then SE will meet the third team from other group.
The Super.Chickens are.acting like.big boys because they won against a.weakened CIV. If they had met football powerhouses like Egypt, the.stoey would.have been different. And your only goal against the Ivoreans was scored by a European you drafted into your team long ago. You people act as if every mixed race European is a Nigerian. That is how you wanted to claim Gift Urban who is from Togo but the guy refused to play for you.
Ni
When did orban become a togolese, how many players does england snatch from us,we couldn’t do nothing.
Our weak team, without Osimhen, defeated Egypt, with Prime Mo Salah, in 2021 AFCON. Ghana, with Prime Kudus, could only draw with an Egyptian team with Salah well past his prime. Wise up.
Mozambique will be Ghana’s waterloo in their last game. I saw Ghana’s back men that were so disorganized and lack full concentrations that Mozambique will know what to do.
@Ndubest.Name calling is not going to help Ghana gets out of this group. But a reality check will. One point in two games is never helpful, and if even Ghana beats Mozambique, of course, such may not happen, will 4 points gets Ghana there after conceding 3 against?
I blame CAF for not fixing us into the same group with your chickens. Let Ghana and Nigeria meet face to face and let’s see who will come out tops. You people boast too much. Keep waiting for Urban Gift to come and join your Super Chickens.
Hahahahahaha. I no fit laugh o. My belle wan burst with laughter. See transferred aggression in its full glory. Pele. Just watch the rest of the Afcon and take heart. I’ll refrain from throwing punches cos of some of your patriots who actually have a brain.
What is actually your problem.people are analyzing football, you are here bringing up issues that don’t concern you. I think you should worry about Ghana and stop this bad belle against Nigeria. We are not mates.
Why are taking medicine fr another mans headache.. you
Anyway you are sick and that is why you always type incoherent statement here.you better face your gaynians team that is about to be eliminated
Oga go and focus on your Benin republic and leave Nigeria alone. You have handles how many matches for them, and all na lose. so wetin dey happen. Oga PE teacher.
When I’m talking, you Oga Rohr followers will be angry with me.
I stopped mentioning Oga Rohr, but suddenly, Oga Rohr and his followers refused to leave us alone.
Very funny, lolz. What can we do now because we can rehire you, Oga Rohr? we are sorry. Just focus on Benin job. You have to move on kę lolz. Ire o. God bless Nigeria!!!
Can’t
A typical Ghanaian who reeks with jealousy. Fix your team first before running others down, Mr Banku-Brain.
You mentioned powerhouses like Egypt? Didn’t Nigeria do to Egypt in 2021 what your team couldn’t do to them in 2024? We chop them like Donkunu in our first AFCON match that year. Dead brain, please check your phone because I know jealousy didn’t allow you to watch that match that year and it was a result you’d quickly wanna forget.
You said we drafted a Whiteman into the team who scored for us against CIV. I’m laughing loud! Abeg, if Ekong was white, your Kelvin Boateng is what? Green?
You also called Gift Orban a Togolese. I’m not actually surprised at this because my grandmother who was born and bred in Ghana, though with full Yoruba/Nigerian ancestry told me that in Ghana, it is the woman who owns a child, not the man, in which culture or tribe over there, I don’t know. But in Nigeria and most African culture, the man being the head of the home, is deemed to be stronger in terms of parental rights and lineage. Orban’s dad is a Nigerian so you should understand why he’s a Nigerian.
Most Ghanaians I know and grew up with are quite hateful and jealous even among themselves. It’s a societal thing to me because it’s too good to be a mere coincidence that those who have managed to sneak to this platform aren’t too different from those I’ve always known.
I knew one Agye who poisoned his friend, a boutique owner, in Osogbo those days just because he felt Agye was making more money than he was, despite the fact that he brought him from Accra in the 70s to join him in his mobile shoe-making business.
Don’t worry, you’ll soon develop hypertension by the time Nigeria wins the cup.
You don finish work my brother. As a well traveled person I always known them to be like this , especially with nigerians.meanwhile.we.dont treat them like that shuuuu na wa ooo. Kenke brain indeed.
