Mohamed Salah got Egypt up and running in their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations as they defeated Guinea-Bissau 1-0 on Saturday evening.
While Egypt largely dominated and improved on their opening performance against Nigeria, Salah’s excellent volley in the 69th minute proved more of a relief than anything.
Three times they hit the post and did appear to be suffering under a weight of anxiety, particularly given manager Carlos Queiroz had been heavily criticised by national media for his tactics against Nigeria.
Before Salah struck, a number of players were guilty of misplacing passes as the weight of the pressure tolled.
Indeed, things could well have been worse had Mama Balde’s stunning equaliser stood.
A rocket scored when cutting in from the right-hand side, VAR intervened and ruled it out for a foul in the build-up.
Egypt are now second in Group D after playing two games, three points behind leaders Nigeria who earlier beat Sudan 3-1.

Guinea bissau were robbed. That game should have been a draw. The Egyptians are just over hyped.
@Chux… The VAR room had four Arabs analyzing the plays and they just helped Egypt. The room was showed on the feed I watched. It was robbery… that game actually ended in a draw
Yes o jimmy, arab connection. So annoying.
How are u brother , as far as I know u are staunch critics of moses Simon the last time I asked u that question u parried it, please wat can u say about MOSES SIMON IN THE LAST 2 MATCHES U HAVE WATCHED ,ARE U STILL STANDING ON UR CRISTICISM AGAINST HIM OR U HAVE EXPLANTIONS FOR US
But the VAR never decided the final say they told the ref to have a look , it was the ref that decided that it was a free kick , the ref should take the the lion share of the blame actually
that uncoordinated match…filled with rough tackles, wreckless kicks etc…well it’s understandably the two countries needed a win. the loss of Egypt to Nigeria really dealt a big blow to their game plans.. maybe in their last match against Sudan we are going to see a more purposeful Egyptians. …to me Egypt1-1sudan
That beautiful screamer that was disallowed is so frustrating the defender held the player shirt and it was a kin contest and the one with more hunger won the ball and his run was superb what on what was that Ref thinking only the goal and effort that was put into scoring that goal alone is appalling that would have been one the goals of this tournament that shot had venom gosh
