Former Nigeria coach, Gernot Rohr believes the current squad of the Super Eagles have what it takes to be successful at the forthcoming 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
Rohr, who was sacked on Sunday by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has been in charge of the three –time African champions for the past 64 months, and is Nigeria’s longest-serving manager.
The German tactician was replaced by Augustine Eguavoen as the interim coach of the Super Eagles.
Eguaveon will now take charge of the team as it begins preparations for the 33rd Africa Cup of Nations taking place in Cameroon from January 9 to February 6, 2022.
However, reacting to the chances of the team at the AFCON tournament, Rohr told AFP that he’s convinced the team will have a good outing at the bi-annual tournament in Cameroon.
“It’s a huge frustration, but I don’t want to argue, it’s not my style. I’m convinced that they will have a very good CAN because the team is in place and this very united group is ready for the challenges that await it.”
“I’m going to have a hard time doing without these great players and this very united staff, but the environment is not always favourable, we cannot control everything.”

I would like to thank the CSN crew for the update.
I wish Rohr well in his future edeavour. The new Super Eagles Head Coach and chief Coach, Austine Eguavoen and Salisu Yusuf have a list of players left to work with and possibly make few additions. Apart from Gernot Rohr’s 23-man list which has a formidable bond, the SE coach should invite, Desser, Dennis, Ebuehi and may be one other to have a compact unit. Eguavoen and Salisu Yusuf must avoid distractions at this early stage of their coaching-ship. IMPORTANTLY, THEY SHOULD CARRY US, NIGERIANS ALONG WITH THEIR PLANS VIA A CONSTANT UPDATE SINCE WE ARE LEFT WITH 3 WEEKS TO AFCON. GOOD LUCK COACH, GOD BLESS OUR HOMELAND. ISAAC, ZURICH.
I actually feel a bit sorry for this man on how things ended. But truly his tenure had run it’s course no matter the circumstance and the team just needed fresh ideas.
NFF is just lucky to have engaged and disengaged a calm-headed Technical Adviser, not a Berti Vogts or Lars Lagerback—type… See the way the man is still speaking glowingly of the squad, after all the silent drama! It just reminds one of that farewell interview Solskjaer had with Manchester United TV, where he was almost moved to tears.
NFF should just be thanking all their lucky stars in the sky that Gernot isn’t troublesome lol…….well, on to the next!!
Thanks so much my brother for this lead.
Funnily, I now feel sorry for Rohr.
DUE TO NFF POLITICS, KESHI ALMOST RESIGN AFTER WINNING AFCON IN YEAR 2013 BECAUSE HE DOESN’T DANCE TO TOES OF NFF ANF BARRISTER GREEN IN TERMS OF PLAYERS SELECTION.
AND THAT IS THE REASON WHY AM AFRAID EQUAVOEN (bcos he always dance to toes of NFF) AND HIS CREWS ( group of Bribery collection).
NIGERIA STILL REMEMBER THE CASE OF SALISU YUSUF BRIBERY SAGA.
He’s a good man a lovely person.I love this man and indeed he loves the super eagles the Nigerian people.
Yes indeed you cannot control everything the evil people in high places who takes major decisions not on sporting grounds rather on personal interest.I think there are personal war between the Nff president and Rohr.Arguments on players invitations, selections and others.I think the Nff wants to have more powers over how things happen in the team however,Rohr may have out of duress danced to their tune only for a limit perhaps the Nff president wanted more and the argument or toss of who is in charge got to a much terrible low that both parties have to split. Also with the sports minister lurking around who apparently doesn’t support the association with the Franco German makes the disassociation easy.
I think most of us acted like the racist we call the Caucasian. Its a shame this is happening in this day and age.I felt so ashamed on how my people treated a very good man a good coach who has had an above average success, met every targets to disdain.Yet we cry so loud of racism hate crimes and all that.
We were horrible to this man.I feel terribly bad I wish I can decide what happens in Nigeria this man this great man would still be with us even beyond Qatar should we qualify.
Good-bye Rohr..I hate goodbyes but I have to.You are a good fellow.
May God be with you and ensure more successes come your way.
That u are good as a person sometimes is not enough where competence is required.
Goodbye Mr Rhor.
We all know that especially in Nigeria, the environment is NEVER favourable even for us citizens to survive.
WE SURELY CANNOT CONTROL EVERYTHING. That says it all.
Quite unfortunate that same environment washed away your earlier good works. But we will continue to love you.
Goodbye. Thanks for everything.
Why the tears! You can’t eat your cake and have it unless you want to vomit undigested food. Is too late to feel sorry for him. I was feeling sorry him since 1 year ago because am not ignorant of the frustrating operation of our NFF.
You might think NFF is disengaging Rohr to please a section of fans who wanted him go? Nooooo because NFF accepting him to continue even after the turbulence. I believe this is because the NFF wants to decide who goes to AFCON and who doesn’t go, I believe that’s the emergency war that have led to this overnight sacking that was settled. I like thinking outside the box and that’s my reason for saying this.
The environment was never supportive for the good coach, the stadium he played qualifiers was against his wish and the players.
Players were invited without him personally needing them. Hense the reason pinnacle of failure became the chief scout.
He was owed months of backlog salaries and his team owed for a year plus. Which FA does that? No wonder the NPFL is dead under NFF.
He wanted to discipline players NFF didn’t allow him. Is that not wickedness? Etc.
I refuse to soil my hands in the disgrace of this good old man because I don’t need disgrace for my generation. Many of us are just sentimental in reasoning, I see no reason we should cry racism when our African players are treated bad because from what am seeing and from comments from certain individuals we are more of a racist than the whites. No foreign employer in Europe or America will treat a black staff the way we treated Rohr. The whites practice racism of skin colour but we practice the most devilish kind of racism. Most of us will be worst than Mr B….I in government.
Anyway football is all about Firing and Hiring, but the manner at which this firing was done is simply inviting garma. This would have been done in a better way that will bring hard feelings, I can see the tears and frustrating situation in old man’s eyes, even in more than half of the players.
I wish you well Mr Rohr, go in peace sir. I will advise due to your age you shouldn’t take any coaching job in a country that resembles Nigeria in anything at all. Take a lesser role in sport and enjoy your retirement. I don’t know when I will forget because I don’t see it happening. I have never loved any Nigerian coach the way I love you. Maybe that’s because of how bad you are treated that may bring the sympathy. Any way sail on Man!
“Let us fail with our own”…..LMAOOoo
There is absolutely no reason to cry. After all said and done Rohr was gonna leave someday, either on expiration of his contract or by getting sacked….we have shouted this loud to the hearing of all long before this day…..our fears had always been just the type of human beings that will be installed as his replacement…..LMAOooo. And how on earth did the NFF not disappoint us…..LMAOOooo. The frustrations and lamentations on the faces of Rohr’s haters says it all….LMAOOooo. Some have even resigned to failure…..LMAOOooo…..something that wasn’t acceptable with Rohr in charge.
The beauty of it all is that the wise old fox will be millions of dollars richer by the time his lawyers finish their work; and we would have paid close to $2m to have Zero chance of even winning the same bronze we claimed was nothing, yet flaunt as the reason Egauvoen is good enough for the job. Otherwise, on a good day a man who hasnt done anything meaningful since 2006: failed with the SE in 2011, failed with the U23s (that U23 was probably the most individually talented u23 team we’ve had since 1996), sacked from Sunshine stars, left sharks FC with the team rooted to the bottom of the league table, relegated Gombe united: shouldn’t be anywhere near leading the SE to AFCON with 3 weeks left.
Since we are prepared to “fail with our own” I just hope they dont take us back to the positions where our players will be ineligible to sign for even championship clubs in England, just as it happened then that Onazi (one of our best players and vice captain at that time) couldnt get a work permit to complete a move to Birmingham city because we were ranked outside the top 60 in the world.
Some of us are allergic to failure biko….! Give me “one of our own” who has a CV that can get him a similar job outside Nigeria and I will support him, but all these ones that depend on NFF jobs for relevance….? Na only matter of time. Is very funny when we lower standards to the barest minimum because of racial and nepotistic sentiments……LMAOOoooo.
I was even thinking the NFF was gonna go for an upgrade to Rohr, whether Nigerian or foreign……LMAOOooo… I didnt know I was only day dreaming…..LMAOoooo.
@Drey, there is no stopping now of the floodgates. It’s funny you mentioned Onazi not being able to move to Birmingham because of our low FIFA rating. There is no way out now, we are on our way to those times. Like I mentioned yesterday, Ndidi was been watched by Real Madrid as a replacement for Casemiro should Chelseafc get Casemiro on free transfer. He would have been the only Nigerian to play for that club. I can now predict that after Eguavoen is done with that team and our rankings drop before the World Cup, Ndidi would not get that transfer. It’s just obvious. Cause and effect.
Many who are calling for the sack of rohr will be shocked, by the time many home base players with quality be drafted quickly into se instead of desser, dennis, lookman, ejiar and etc.
Se has finaly become a breeding platform for the home base who wants to transit to Europe.
Dare sports minister there will be no more rohr should shut up and face His job.
Pinnick there will be no more dressing room indiscipline ok.
Everything is now looking green for se.
Yoruba adage says if a woman does not try two husband, she might not have a good sense of judgment as to know which one is better.
We will never know now until after afcon before we can judge whether NFF decision is right thing to do now or not.
***THE SECRET HAS LEAKED OUT***
THE REFUSAL BY GERNOT ROHR TO HAVE EQUAVOEN AS PART OF HIS EAGLE ASSISTANCE TECHNICAL CREW FOR AFCON MADE NFF TO SACK HIM.
NIGERIA IS IN DANGET. WE HAVE POLITICALIZE ALL THINGS IN NIGERIA
That’s just little, more is coming. That’s what you wanted.
I’m not going to read much into this yet.
Insisting on Eguavoen as assistant for AFCON may be in a bid to augment Rohrs failing technical ability as seen by many. They just wanted him to support Rohr to assure Nigerian somewhat of a good AFCON outing for the SE.
But I don’t think someone like Rohr would have refused such an offer. I see a man who was desperate to keep his job.
