England dismissed Australia for 225 and lead by 78 runs with 10 wickets remaining after day two at The Oval. The hosts began the day batting but added just 23 further runs before being bowled out for 294. Jos Buttler top scored for England with 70, while Michell Marsh was the pick of the Aussie bowlers with 5-46.

Jofra Archer dismissed David Warner and Marcus Harris, with neither of the Australia openers managing double figures, but Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschange steadied the ship with a 69-run partnership. Labuschange fell just short of a half-century after he was dismissed lbw by Archer, while Smith was dropped on 66 before being removed for 80 by Chris Woakes.
Archer posted figures of 6-62, while all-rounder Sam Curran impressed on his return to the Test side with 3-46. There was just enough time for England to begin their second innings and they finished on 9-0 at close of play on Friday.
