Nigerian scrabble players will once again engage in intense competition for a prize fund of N6.5 million for five categories at the Fourth Governor Douye Diri National Scrabble Championship, scheduled to take place from August 23 to 25 in Yenagoa, Delta State, South-South Nigeria.
The Chairman of the Main Organising Committee (MOC), Mr. Daniel Alabrah, announced this in a statement on Tuesday, July 23, noting that preparations are underway to ensure a smooth tournament.

“The Governor Diri Scrabble Championship has become the biggest tournament on the NSF [Nigeria Scrabble Federation] calendar and attracts the country’s top players who are excelling in the local, African, and international circuits,” Alabrah said.
Alabrah, who also serves as the Bayelsa State Scrabble Association chairman, added that the fourth edition would feature five categories: Masters, Intermediate, Veterans, Opens, and Students based in the state. He also mentioned that the committee has set aside special prizes for female players.
He added that this edition offers a larger prize fund compared to the previous three tournaments.
“This season promises to be bigger as the prize fund has been increased to N6.5 million for the top four categories. The winner of the Masters will receive the top prize of N750,000 and a giant trophy. This prize was N500,000 in the previous three editions,” he said.
He praised Governor Diri’s commitment to sports development, noting that Bayelsa State is becoming a sporting hub in the South-South region.
African Scrabble champion Enoch Nwali, who recently won the Ultimate Scrabble Showdown, won the Masters category last year.
