Former Nigerian international Sylvanus Okpala has advised Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle to focus more on the team’s 2026 World Cup qualifying match against Rwanda and not the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Recall that the 2026 World Cup qualifiers will resume in March while the 2025 AFCON will commence in December 21.
In a chat with Brila FM, Okpala noted that qualifying for the World Cup should be Chelle’s priority at the moment.
He also said that for Nigeria to emerge champion at the 2025 AFCON, the team must first qualify from Group C that consist of Tunisia, Tanzania and Uganda.

“We are a strong team, and now we need to focus on World Cup qualification. After that, in October, we can think about what comes next, but now, we need to be focused on one goal, and the goal is the next game against Rwanda.
“If you want to win AFCON, you have to win all your matches, no matter who is in your group or who you face next. The Tunisians, we know them well. Uganda and Tanzania are also teams to fear.
“The most important thing is that we have to win all matches, no matter who we are playing.”

True talk. We need to beat Rwanda blue black. We would have beaten them last time but Eguavon used Eagle’s bench instead of the key players. Afcon is later. Our focus now must be on world cup qualifier.
