Three-straight African champions, D’Tigress are back in Nigeria with the most prestigious trophy on the continent.
The Nigerian queens defeated Mali 70-59 Sunday night in Yaounde to win the 2021 Afrobasket Women. The feat means they have continued to dominate African basketball winning the 2017, 2019 and 2021 editions without dropping a game.
Nigeria had previously won the 2003 and 2005 editions in Maputo and Abuja respectively.
D’Tigress returned Monday morning aboard an ASky flight from Yaounde. Only three members of the team however returned with the coveted trophy while the others are billed to leave Yaahot Hotel, Yaounde at Monday midnight back to their clubs and schools.

Musa Murjaratu and Nkem Akaraiwe returned with one of the team’s assistant coaches, Samson Sotuminu. Sotuminu is the coach of Air Warriors, the current champions of the Zenith Bank Women’s League.
They were led back by the NBBF vice president Babs Ogunade and Col Sam Ahmedu (retd) of the NBBF and FIBA Africa.
D’Tigress captain Adaora Elonu explained why the rest of the team couldn’t return to Nigeria.
“The timing is very challenging; it was not the best time of the season for many of us and that’s why some of our players couldn’t be in camp.
“It is the start of season for clubs and schools,” Elonu said as she waited for her flight back to Russia.
The Nigeria Basketball Federation is expected to announce a reception programme for the team in conjunction with the sports ministry.

Here’s hoping the team gets a significant reward for their heroics.
Salute is nice, but salute has never been known to pay bills or put food on the table.
Oya, Wazza Dazzler, sports ministry, all relevant parties, make unu shake body. Make unu shake am well well!
It will be a shame if Otis Hughley, his assistants and these wonderful ladies end up empty handed after everything they accomplished!!!
Congratulations lasses.
Rohr doesn’t believe his prodigiously talented team can win AFCON talk more of Afro Asian or World cup.
His internet keyboard Warriors are satisfied with mediocrity (albeit supporting Amodu(RIP) pre world cup 2010). We know them and their celebration of Rohr’s tactical ineptitude is not new to us.
Pre AFCON 2008,Berti Voghts warned Brazil to be careful because of the talents he saw in camp. After 5 years Rohr doesn’t believe in Himself let alone the constellation of stars at his disposal.
And here you are glorifying Vogts’ tenure….LMAOOoo. The same Vogts that struggled to qualify for AFCON with “talents that can scare Brazil” according to you….LMAOOoo.
Someone calls himself Coache and doesnt know what set-peice is in football…..LMAOOOoo…and he’s still here talking nonsense. This one na hungry coache o
So what did your Berti Vogts achieve at 2008 AFCON eventually…even with a better team than Rohr’s….LMAOOoo. He couldn’t even defeat a 10-man team….LMAOOOo….yet Brazil should be careful of the talents he had….LMAOOooo. Shebi AFCON easy to win…why didnt your Vogts win even Bronze….LMAOOOoo
Talk is cheap. That bragging bragging and ending up with disappointment is what Rohr is not giving you that is making you and your cohorts have malaria
Its obvious some parts of your body are itchy, pls go and scratch it
