Claudio Pizarro has become the oldest goalscorer in Bundesliga history after netting in Werder Bremen’s 1-1 draw at Hertha Berlin on Saturday.
Former Peru international salvaged a point for Werder at the Olympiastadion, as he struck a free kick in the sixth minute of stoppage time to level the scores up.
That means, at 40 years, four months and 13 days, Pizarro has become the oldest scorer in the German top-flight, surpassing the previous record held by Mirko Votava, who was a month younger when he netted for Werder against Stuttgart in August 1996.
Pizarro was certainly proud to have broken the record, although he was more concerned about helping Werder to a hard-fought point that leaves them 10th in the Bundesliga standings.
“I’m very happy, very proud about [becoming the oldest scorer in Bundesliga history],” Pizarro told the official Bundesliga website. “We had one opportunity at the end, and we scored. One point is very important.”
Pizarro has now scored three goals in 17 Bundesliga appearances since joining Werder for a fifth time during the summer.
The forward originally moved to the Weserstadion from Alianza Lima in 1999.
